A man lost on the ice of the Kuršių Lagoon: firefighters set out on a search
A man became lost while walking on the ice of the Kuršių Lagoon and was successfully rescued by firefighters in Lithuania.
On Saturday at 6:46 PM, firefighters in Lithuania were alerted to a situation involving a man who had become lost on the ice of the Kuršių Lagoon in the Klaipėda district, specifically in Dreverna. The man indicated he was approximately in the middle of the lagoon, attempting to navigate his way back through snowmobile tracks towards Dreverna from Juodkrantė. He reported feeling very tired and concerned that he wouldn’t make it to the shore, with about 4 kilometers left to walk.
Firefighters quickly mobilized and proceeded to search for the man while maintaining contact with him through his phone. They equipped themselves with flashlights to enhance visibility in the dark and ventured about 2 kilometers into the ice before locating the lost individual. This coordinated search and rescue effort not only demonstrates the rapid response capabilities of the local firefighting unit but also highlights the dangers individuals may face when traversing icy bodies of water in winter.
Once found, the man was escorted safely back to shore and handed over to medical personnel for evaluation. This incident serves as a reminder of the importance of safety precautions when engaging in outdoor activities during winter months, especially in regions where ice is present.
