Clean Monday: Koulouma in municipalities of Attica - Who will make the largest lagana

Municipalities in Attica are celebrating Clean Monday with traditional foods, music, and kite flying, with some towns promising to create the largest lagana bread.

In Attica, the tradition of Clean Monday is being celebrated by most municipalities both in and out of the metropolitan area. The celebration includes a range of Lenten foods, music, dancing, and, of course, the traditional lagana bread, which is an integral part of the festivities. Open-air tables will be available for the public, encouraging families to enjoy the day, while children will fly their kites, a common activity during this holiday. Nearly all municipalities have planned musical programs to enhance the celebratory atmosphere.

Particularly notable are the municipality of Peristeri and Ilioupoli, both of which have promised to create the largest lagana, attracting public attention and participation. Over the decades, a favorite spot for Athenians on this day has been the Hill of Filopappou, where people gather to fly their kites and celebrate. Under the clear Attica sky, the Philharmonic Orchestra of the City of Athens will welcome attendees with musical performances starting at 11 AM and there will be free Lenten delicacies available, promoting community spirit and festive joy.

The City of Athens has also organized a traditional island-style celebration featuring well-known artists, set to commence at 11:30 AM, further enriching the cultural experience of the day. This event not only showcases local customs and culinary dishes but also strengthens community bonds as residents participate in these joyful festivities, making Clean Monday a significant occasion for social interaction and cultural heritage in Greece.
