The Minister of Culture Wants to Allocate 10 Million for Statues of Women
The Danish Culture Ministry proposes a budget of 10 million kroner to create statues commemorating historically significant women in Denmark.
The Danish Culture Ministry has proposed allocating 10 million kroner to fund the creation of statues dedicated to women of historical and contemporary significance. This initiative comes in light of a recent study from the Museum of Art in Public Spaces, which revealed a stark disparity in the representation of men and women in public statues. In Denmark, there are currently 483 statues of historically significant men compared to only 43 statues of women.
In conjunction with this proposal, a committee established by the Culture Ministry has developed a database containing information on 3,000 women, both living and deceased, who are deemed worthy of being commemorated with statues. This effort is aimed not only at increasing the visibility of women in the public space but also at addressing the historical oversight surrounding their contributions to Danish society.
The committee has also compiled a top 100 list of women who have made significant national contributions, which includes figures such as Queen Thyra, former Prime Minister Helle Thorning-Schmidt, and handball player Anja Andersen. The funding and recognition sought through this initiative underscore a broader movement towards gender equity in public representations and the honoring of women's roles in history.
