Today marks Clean Monday, a day that traditionally begins the fasting period of Lent in Greece, leading to increased shopping activity for special foods associated with the occasion. Despite it being a day of significance for consumers, it is not a mandatory holiday for the private sector, leading to most of the retail operations remaining closed.
In the supermarket sector, the situation shows a mixed response. Major chains like Sklavenitis, AB Vasilopoulos, and Masoutis will not operate today, which may affect those planning to shop for the holiday. However, Lidl will be open with reduced hours from 7:45 AM to 4:00 PM, along with select myMarket locations from 8:00 AM to 2:00 PM, addressing demands from customers during this key retail period.
Additionally, smaller convenience stores, including Shop & Go and OK! Markets, will operate normally, many extending their hours to cater to shoppers. Bakeries and fish markets will also welcome early customers, indicating a robust local market activity despite larger retailers shutting down for the day, reflecting the cultural significance of Clean Monday in Greece.
