Levi's popular vacation cabin area darkened for several hours - Nearly 30 degrees of frost overnight
A power outage due to a fire in electrical equipment left over a thousand visitors in the Rakkavaara area of Levi without electricity for several hours during a cold winter night.
The popular vacation cabin area of Rakkavaara in Levi experienced a significant power outage that lasted for several hours, leaving over a thousand customers without electricity from Sunday evening into Monday morning. The outage was triggered by a fire that broke out in an electrical cabinet, which was reported by the local power company, Rovakaira, around eight o'clock in the evening. Power was restored to all customers shortly after five in the morning.
Rakkavaara is a favored accommodation area adjacent to the Levi ski resort, and the outage coincided with the end of southern Finland's winter holiday week. It affected many vacationers, as families were returning from the southern week-long holidays, while schools in the central part of the country were starting their winter break on Monday. The timing of the outage likely heightened the inconvenience for many who were looking to enjoy the winter season in Levi.
On the evening of the outage, temperatures in Levi dropped below -20 degrees Celsius, and throughout the night, the cold intensified, approaching -30 degrees Celsius. Such severe cold exacerbates the difficulties caused by a power outage, particularly for those staying in vacation homes that rely heavily on electric heating. This incident serves as a reminder of the challenges winter weather can pose, especially during peak holiday seasons in popular tourist destinations like Levi.
