Mexico's largest drug cartel leader 'El Mencho' killed... city paralyzed

Mexican forces have killed notorious drug cartel leader Nemesio Oseguera, known as 'El Mencho', leading to increased violence and unrest across Mexico.

Mexican troops have successfully executed a military operation resulting in the death of Nemesio Oseguera, also known as 'El Mencho', the head of the infamous Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG). The operation took place in Tapalpa, Jalisco, where Oseguera succumbed to injuries while being transported to Mexico City for treatment. During the encounter, four associates were killed on-site, while two others were apprehended along with a significant cache of weapons, including armored vehicles and rocket launchers. This confrontation also left three Mexican soldiers injured.

The Jalisco New Generation Cartel, formed in the late 2000s, is notorious for its involvement in drug production and trafficking, dealing in cocaine, methamphetamine, and fentanyl. Besides drug trafficking, the cartel is engaged in human trafficking, fuel theft, and forced labor. With advanced equipment such as military-grade arms and drones at their disposal, they are recognized as one of the most violent crime organizations in Mexico, rivaling the more established Sinaloa Cartel, which has been at the forefront of Mexico's drug trade.

El Mencho's rise to power has been attributed to a power vacuum following the arrest of Sinaloa Cartel leader Joaquin Guzman ('El Chapo') in 2016. The United States government has designated the CJNG as a foreign terrorist organization and placed a $15 million bounty on El Mencho's head. Having engaged in criminal activities since the age of 19, Oseguera has had numerous arrests for drug-related offenses and served time in the U.S. before being repatriated to Mexico, where he subsequently escalated his criminal enterprise to unprecedented levels.
