This year, mobile devices can use a digital wallet – here's what it's about

Finland will introduce a digital identity wallet for mobile devices by the end of 2026, allowing residents to securely identify themselves in various services and control their personal information sharing.

Finland is set to implement a digital identity wallet on mobile devices by the end of 2026, allowing users to securely authenticate themselves for numerous services. This application, when launched, will feature a digital identification that includes unique personal information essential for electronic identification, along with plans to incorporate a digital driver's license in the future. This progressive initiative is being spearheaded by the Digital and Population Data Services Agency (DVV).

The digital wallet will enable users to authenticate for services or prove the accuracy of their personal data, such as checking hunting licenses or requesting discounts. Entities that accept wallet services must communicate with Finland's Transport and Communications Agency (Traficom) to register their services, specifying what data they will request and how that data will be utilized. This regulation establishes a framework to ensure user transparency and privacy protection, which is particularly significant in today's digital age.

As Finland embraces this innovative approach, the move towards a digital society reflects broader trends across Europe in enhancing digital identity solutions. By empowering users with control over their information and usage, this digital wallet not only aligns with global digital trends but also aims to elevate Finland's position as a leader in digital governance and automation.
