Tour of Rwanda: two spectators killed by a vehicle from the caravan veering off the road

A tragic accident during the Tour of Rwanda resulted in the deaths of two spectators and injuries to six others when a vehicle from the race caravan veered off the road.

The Tour of Rwanda commenced on February 22, featuring 84 riders in its first stage, the longest of the competition, covering 173 km with significant elevation changes. However, the event took a sorrowful turn when a vehicle from the caravan veered off the road, tragically killing two spectators and injuring six more. This incident cast a shadow over the opening stage, which was won by Israeli cyclist Itamar Einhorn of NSN DΓ©veloppement, previously a member of Israel PremierTech.

In response to the accident, Rwandan Sports Minister Nelly Mukazayire expressed her condolences on social media, declaring it a "very sad moment" for the nation. She noted that the injured spectators are currently receiving appropriate medical care and that their conditions are being monitored closely, highlighting the seriousness of the situation.

The accident not only disrupts the celebratory atmosphere usually surrounding such events but also raises concerns about the safety protocols for spectators during sporting events in Rwanda. As investigations into the causes of the accident unfold, discussions may arise regarding the implementation of more stringent safety measures in future races to prevent similar tragedies.
