Throwing stones with a stick more delicate than fingertips... Going for a 'happy end'
The South Korean wheelchair curling team prepares for the upcoming Winter Paralympics in Milan, aiming to achieve medal success after a rigorous training period.
The Winter Olympics in Milan and Cortina d'Ampezzo concluded on the 22nd, but the celebrations continue as the Winter Paralympics are set to take place from March 6-15. South Korea's Paralympic team has set ambitious goals, aiming for one gold medal, one bronze, and to rank 20th overall in the competition across five events with a total of 20 athletes participating. The wheelchair curling team was in the final stages of training at the Korea Disability Sports Association's training center in Icheon, focusing on refining their techniques and strategies to enhance performance during the games.
During the training sessions, athletes engaged in detailed discussions about their gameplay, indicating an emphasis on precision in executing shots. The rules for wheelchair curling mirror those of regular curling in many aspects; however, there are notable differences, such as the absence of sweeping and the use of a delivery stick for throwing stones. Matches consist of eight ends instead of ten, necessitating a more strategic approach and careful shot execution by the four-member team, showcasing the unique challenges faced by these athletes. Furthermore, athletes were seen practicing in pairs for the mixed-doubles event, encouraging each other and sharing the passion and dedication that fuels their journey.
With the first matches against Italy and Latvia scheduled for March 4 and 7, respectively, the South Korean team expresses optimism and determination. After experiencing disappointment by finishing sixth at the last Paralympics in Beijing, curlers like Baek Hye-jin are determined to shake off past regrets. The extreme cold of the curling rink was forgotten in the warm atmosphere of determination among the athletes, reminding them of their ultimate goal: to succeed and bring home medals for their country at the upcoming Milan Paralympics.
