Mamdani Closes New York Transit Network in Preparation for Major Snowstorm
New York Mayor Zahraan Mamdani announced the closure of the city's transit network in anticipation of a major snowstorm that is expected to hit the northeastern United States.
New York City Mayor Zahraan Mamdani announced on Sunday the closure of the entire transport network, with exceptions for emergency movement, in preparation for a significant snowstorm expected to affect the northeastern coast of the United States. This emergency measure will be in effect from Sunday evening through Monday afternoon, restricting all forms of vehicle traffic, including cars, trucks, scooters, and electric bikes across the city's streets, highways, and bridges.
Mamdani emphasized that essential workers and emergency transportation will not be affected by the closures in a city of over eight million residents. He urged New Yorkers to avoid all non-essential travel, noting that the city has not experienced a storm of this magnitude in the past decade. The mayor's announcement highlights the severity of the winter weather, which is expected to bring approximately 30 centimeters of snow, rapidly developing as it approaches the East Coast.
Additionally, the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) has announced a complete suspension of Long Island Rail Road services and significant reductions in subway and Metro-North train operations. The swift preparation reflects both the potential impact on public safety and the city's overall ability to respond to severe weather conditions, as residents brace for what could be one of the worst winter storms in recent years.
