Kalle Rovanperä drove a surprise test

Two-time world rally champion Kalle Rovanperä unexpectedly tested a Formula 2 car last week in Jerez, Spain.

Kalle Rovanperä, the two-time world rally champion, took part in an unexpected test of a Formula 2 car in Jerez, Spain, as reported by Revista Scratch. The test occurred at a venue that has historical significance as it hosted F1 races during the 1980s and 1990s. Rovanperä has been actively involved in motorsports, having previously competed in the Formula Regional series in New Zealand earlier in the winter, with his sights set on a competitive season in Japan's Super Formula series.

During the test, Rovanperä drove a Hitech Formula 2 car adorned in full Red Bull livery, having previously driven the same team’s Regional car in New Zealand. The lucky timing of the weather ensured that Rovanperä could perform his test in favorable conditions, despite a storm circulating the Cádiz area, which fortunately did not affect the Jerez circuit. Such tests are crucial for Rovanperä as he aims to accumulate as much experience in Formula 2 as possible to prepare for a potential entry into the series next season.

Looking ahead, the Super Formula season is set to begin in early April at the Motegi circuit, with official tests scheduled to take place next week in Suzuka. Rovanperä has expressed his desire to undertake numerous Formula 2 tests this year, indicating a serious commitment to transitioning into this competitive racing environment as he seeks to broaden his motorsport career beyond rallying.
