'Her life will not be in vain': community garden honors young victim of femicide in MG

A community garden in Boa Esperança, Brazil, honors Mariene Aparecida Faria, a 24-year-old woman murdered by her boyfriend, symbolizing memory and resistance against femicide.

In the rural community of Barro Preto, Boa Esperança, the silence of the countryside is juxtaposed with the pain that continues to resonate in the Casa Amarela, the home of the Faria family. Two years after the tragic femicide of Mariene Aparecida Faria, the backyard is not just a garden but a testament of memory, resilience, and the ongoing struggle against violence towards women. Mariene was only 24 years old when she was brutally murdered by her then-boyfriend, Luiz Felipe Silva, on a Sunday during carnival in February 2024, after she decided to end the relationship. He reacted violently, stabbing her 27 times, and although he was arrested, justice has yet to be served as he has not yet been tried for the crime.
