Three stranded sperm whales will be removed and one will be autopsied

Three sperm whales that stranded near Fanø will be removed due to their proximity to tourist areas, and one will undergo an autopsy for research purposes.

Three sperm whales that have stranded on the beaches of Fanø are set to be removed following concerns about their location near tourist hotspots. The Danish Environment Agency announced this decision, stating they would plan the logistics of how and where to move the whales in the coming week. Additionally, at least one of these whales will be autopsied, allowing parts of it to be used for scientific research, though details regarding the autopsy's location and which whale will be selected for it remain unclear.

The agency confirmed that all six stranded sperm whales at Fanø were deceased as of Sunday. Among them is one whale that previously stranded at Blåvandshuk a week ago but was reported to have drifted away. The identification of the whales and their condition has prompted a coordinated effort between the Environment Agency and the Fisheries and Maritime Museum.

Authorities are taking precautions by removing whale jaws, which will be preserved for museum purposes. This effort reflects not only a response to public safety regarding the proximity of the whales to popular tourist areas but also a commitment to marine research, highlighting the ongoing interplay between human activities and marine wildlife conservation efforts in Denmark.
