Evros: Over 100,000 acres flooded - embankments broke in Kornos and Amorion

Over 100,000 acres have flooded in the Evros region due to rising river waters, with significant damage in the municipality of Soufli.

In the Evros region of Greece, rising water levels have led to the flooding of over 100,000 acres, affecting the entire floodplain area of the municipality of Soufli. According to Soufli's mayor, Panagiotis Kalakikos, embankments broke in Kornos in the morning and in Mandra in the afternoon, prompting urgent measures to protect local communities. The situation is critical, with nearly 60,000 acres inundated from Tycheros to Amorion, and agricultural lands across the entire floodplain submerged.

The local authorities are prioritizing the protection of residential areas and homes as water levels continue to rise, posing an increasing threat. The mayor expressed concern that the risk will increase if rain occurs in the coming days, stating that while there is hope for dry weather, any additional rainfall would make it impossible to drain the water already accumulated. Heavy rains could exacerbate the flooding crisis and complicate the efforts to manage the emergency effectively.

Emergency services are currently focusing on deploying pumps in affected municipalities to counteract the flooding. The situation emphasizes the vulnerability of the region to extreme weather events and the need for robust disaster preparedness and response plans to safeguard communities from such natural disasters.
