'Momo... Massaging for 500', FIR registered in case of misconduct with North-East women in Delhi
An FIR has been filed against two individuals for inappropriate and racially charged remarks towards North-East women in Malviya Nagar, Delhi, during a dispute over a home renovation project.
In Malviya Nagar, Delhi, an incident occurred involving a group of North-East women who called an electrician to install an air conditioner in their rented fourth-floor flat. During the drilling work, dust and debris fell to the lower floor, causing a dispute with their neighbors, Harsh Singh and his wife Ruby Jain. This confrontation escalated into a larger argument on February 20, at around 3:30 PM, leading to the involvement of local law enforcement.
The women have alleged that, during the dispute, they were subjected to derogatory and racially insensitive remarks. A video that has since gone viral captures one of the accused using offensive language directed at the North-East women, while also showing a police officer present trying to de-escalate the situation. The accused reportedly referred to one of the women in a derogatory manner, saying, 'Momo. Working in a massage parlor for 500,' which reflects a common stereotype associated with women from the North-East region of India.
This incident highlights ongoing issues of racism and discrimination faced by North-East communities in urban India. The affected women have reported experiencing mental harassment and humiliation, prompting them to file a complaint at the Malviya Nagar police station against Singh and Jain under various sections of the Indian Penal Code, including provisions against criminal intimidation and misconduct. The case raises awareness about the need for sensitivity and respect toward diverse communities within the country.
