More avalanches, two more climbers dead
Two climbers have died in separate avalanche incidents in northern Italy's Alpine regions.
In a tragic series of events in northern Italy, two climbers lost their lives due to avalanches in the Alpine regions of Merano 2000 (South Tyrol) and Val d'Ayas (Aosta Valley). The first incident occurred shortly after noon when a skier was engulfed by an avalanche triggered from Monte Plattinger. A coordinated search and rescue operation involving 50 to 70 rescuers from nearby areas, equipped with search dogs, probes, and helicopters using Recco tracking technology, was initiated following reports of the skier's failure to return.
The second fatality was reported at a high altitude of 3000 meters on the slopes of Becca di Nana in Val d'Ayas. The searches commenced after another hiker was reported missing. The local alpine rescue team and the Guardia di Finanza intervened, recovering the victim's body and transporting it to a valley via helicopter. The identification of the victim is being handled by the Guardia di Finanza, showcasing the seriousness of the situation.
These incidents come shortly after warnings about snow instability in the region, highlighting the danger that avalanches pose to climbers and outdoor enthusiasts in the Italian Alps. As winter conditions continue to present risks, local authorities urge caution and adherence to safety regulations to prevent further tragedies in the mountains.
