Hungary will block new EU sanctions against Russia due to the dispute over the pipeline in Ukraine

Hungary has announced it will block new EU sanctions against Russia in response to halted oil supplies through the Druzhba pipeline linked to Ukraine's refusal to resume transit for Hungary and Slovakia.

Hungary has stated it will obstruct the European Union's 20th package of sanctions against Russia, claiming that Ukraine is responsible for the ongoing suspension of Russian oil deliveries through the Druzhba pipeline. Since January 27, supplies to Hungary and Slovakia have ceased following Ukrainian reports of drone attacks on transmission facilities in western Ukraine. Both Hungary and Slovakia blame Ukraine for the protracted disruption of these energy supplies.

The EU is preparing to enact sanctions aimed at Russia, with many member states eager to finalize the new measures before the fourth anniversary of Russia's full invasion of Ukraine on February 24. The sanctions are set to include a complete ban on maritime services associated with the supply of Russian oil and LNG, as well as restrictions targeting the Russian fleet. However, Hungary's Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó has made it clear that these sanctions will not proceed unless Ukraine resumes oil transit through the pipeline.

This situation highlights the ongoing geopolitical tension within Europe as member states navigate their reliance on Russian energy while acknowledging the impact of sanctions on Russia’s economy. Hungary's position illustrates the complex interplay between national interests and broader EU solidarity in addressing the conflict stemming from the war in Ukraine, as well as the critical timeframe leading up to the anniversary of the invasion.
