Abiy Ahmed: We strengthened our military capabilities and expanded training to include the sea
Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed announced the expansion of military training to maritime capabilities, emphasizing the country’s advancements in technology and preparedness to protect regional stability.
In a recent address marking the 65th anniversary of the Ethiopian Special Forces, Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed stated that Ethiopia has enhanced its military capabilities to include maritime training, moving beyond land and mountainous operations. He highlighted the development of a technically elite force equipped with drones and artificial intelligence to quickly resolve conflicts. Ahmed emphasized that these military upgrades are not just for aggression but aim to prevent wars and terrorism, establishing a strong shield for African countries in the region.
Ahmed elaborated on Ethiopia's strategic intentions to reconnect with maritime access, previously lost after Eritrea's independence in 1993. He argued that the military readiness aligns with a broader philosophy of viewing water as a source of life, development, and strategic opportunity, rather than a barrier. This perspective is part of Ethiopia's initiative to develop riverbanks and construct dams, indicating a shift in the nation’s approach to water and its resources.
The Prime Minister also expressed readiness to protect stability across the region, from the Somali borders to Eritrea, highlighting Ethiopia's commitment to combating transnational terrorism. This military focus, alongside the economic and infrastructural developments related to their river systems, reflects Ethiopia's strategy to redefine its role regionally as a pivotal nation capable of influencing peace and security in East Africa, as well as asserting its technological advancements in defense.
