Limnos: Request to declare a state of emergency - Schools closed on Tuesday

Residents of Limnos are desperate as flooding has once again devastated their properties and island infrastructure, prompting local officials to seek a state of emergency.

The residents of Limnos Island in Greece are facing despair once again as they endure the aftermath of destructive flooding that has severely damaged properties and infrastructures. This calamity struck the island for the second time in three months, leading to significant distress among the inhabitants, particularly impacting areas such as Myrina where the fire department has been engaged in pumping out water from over 60 homes and businesses. The situation has reached a critical point, urging local authorities to take immediate action.

Elena Georga, the mayor of Limnos, expressed her concerns in an interview with ERTnews, highlighting that the island has suffered extensive damage to public infrastructure, private properties, and essential services due to the recent weather events. In light of these circumstances, she has formally requested the declaration of a state of emergency from the Secretary General for Civil Protection, Nikos Papaevstathiou. The local government is currently focused on addressing the urgent needs of those affected and ensuring that necessary support is provided to repair the damage.

As of now, the municipalities of Myrina, Atsiki, and New Koutalis have already been under a state of emergency since the November weather challenges. The recent developments have led to the closure of schools on the island, exacerbating the challenges that the community must face in the days ahead. This situation underscores the increasing frequency and intensity of extreme weather events, raising concerns about the broader implications for disaster preparedness and response strategies in the region.
