The PP promises a renovation plan for all major dams and to invest 100 billion euros by 2035: "The safety of Spaniards is not guaranteed"
The People's Party (PP) in Spain promises to invest 100 billion euros in a renovation plan for dams to enhance safety and infrastructure maintenance if they come to power.
In a recent interview, Alberto Núñez Feijóo, leader of the People's Party (PP), revealed plans for a comprehensive National Water Plan intended to be approved within the first hundred days of his potential government. He expressed concern over the current political climate, stating that discussing proposals is difficult due to ongoing scandals. Nonetheless, he emphasized the necessity of addressing dam maintenance and infrastructure deterioration before the situation worsens, outlining that Spain has more dams than any other EU country, with approximately 1,300 classified as large.
Feijóo also cited alarming statistics from the Association of Engineers of Roads, Canals, and Ports, revealing that 76% of the 375 state-owned dams lack implemented emergency plans. This raises significant safety concerns, as three out of four dams do not have the preparations necessary to respond to potential emergencies.
The announcement of this plan marks a critical moment in Spanish politics, as it indicates the PP's commitment to infrastructure safety and proactive management of water resources. With Spain's reliance on its dams for both water management and safety, the implementation of this plan could have far-reaching implications for environmental management, public safety, and the political landscape leading up to the elections.
