Unlicensed driver piloted boat involved in accident with 6 dead in Rio Grande, says PM
Six people died after the boat they were in crashed into a pier on the banks of the Rio Grande in Brazil.
A tragic accident occurred on Saturday night (21st) when a boat collided with a pier on the Minas Gerais side of the Rio Grande, resulting in the deaths of six individuals. The police revealed that the boat's pilot, Wesley Carlos da Costa, 45, was unlicensed to operate small vessels. Reports indicate that survivors mentioned the pilot's lack of proper nautical certification, which is necessary for operating recreational boats in Brazilian waters.
Among the deceased was Wesley himself, along with five others, including a 5-year-old child and her mother, who tragically drowned in the incident. At the time of the accident, which took place at around 10:30 PM near the border with São Paulo state, there were a total of 15 people aboard. The group had reportedly been returning from a floating bar where a show was being held and had consumed alcohol prior to the crash.
This incident highlights critical issues concerning safety regulations in Brazil's recreational boating sector, especially the importance of having licensed operators. The police are expected to conduct further investigations into the circumstances leading to the crash, as well as the actions of individuals involved in the incident prior to the collision.
