Former military official: One reason prevents US attack on Iran so far

A former US military official suggests that the only thing preventing a US military strike against Iran is the pace of military buildup.

In a recent statement, former Pentagon and White House military official David DeRoach discussed the various military options available to President Donald Trump regarding Iran. Despite the significant US military presence in the Middle East, with one of the largest air force concentrations since the 2003 Iraq invasion, Trump has not yet decided on a military strike. DeRoach emphasizes that while various tensions have existed between Iran and its neighbors as well as the United States for years, the recent Iranian protests and Trump’s comments about taking action have created a unique and precarious situation.

DeRoach pointed out that the growing public dissent in Iranian cities during December and January has changed the dynamics, impacting US considerations for military intervention. He believes that the military tempo and the looming possibility of striking Iran need to be weighed against these new domestic pressures within the country. This analysis indicates that not only international relations but also internal Iranian politics are playing a critical role in the decision-making process related to potential military action.

As military posturing intensifies, the implications for US-Iran relations remain complex. The situation highlights the intricate balancing act the Trump administration faces as they navigate established geostrategic interests in the region while responding to internal unrest within Iran. Thus, the current military buildup serves as a point of contention and caution rather than an immediate indication for an impending attack.
