A new study highlights that several dog breeds with brachycephalic features, previously primarily associated with health issues such as BOAS, are part of an expanding list of at-risk breeds.
Research led by Francesca Tomlinson from Cambridge University has revealed that the growing popularity of brachycephalic dog breeds, characterized by their short and flat snouts, has resulted in a significant rise in related health issues. Brachycephalic obstructive airway syndrome (BOAS) is a primary concern, as it leads to obstructed breathing, impacting the dogs' ability to exercise, sleep, and manage heat or stress. While English bulldogs, French bulldogs, and pugs are often the focus of concern, the study demonstrates that other breeds are also at risk.
Tomlinson and her team investigated 898 dogs from 14 different breeds to determine the extent of BOAS susceptibility. The breeds included in the study were Affenpinschers, Boston Terriers, Boxers, Cavalier King Charles Spaniels, Chihuahuas, Bordeaux Dogs, Brussels Griffons, Japanese Chin, Maltese Bichons, Pekingese, King Charles Spaniels, Pomeranians, Shih Tzus, and Staffordshire Bull Terriers. Each breed displayed varying levels of risk for BOAS, expanding the concerns beyond the commonly noted breeds. This research underscores the urgent need for awareness regarding the health complications faced by larger numbers of dogs than previously recognized.
The findings from this study are crucial for both breeders and potential dog owners, emphasizing the importance of informed breeding practices and responsible ownership. The increased awareness of health issues related to brachycephalic breeds may lead to more sustainable choices in breeding, potentially reducing the prevalence of BOAS and improving the overall quality of life for many breeds.
