"It's quite hard, but my hands are trained!" Figure skater Niina Petrõkina and speed skater Marten Liiv will carry the Estonian flag at the Olympics closing ceremony

Estonian athletes Niina Petrõkina and Marten Liiv are set to carry the national flag at the closing ceremony of the Milano Cortina Winter Olympics, with Petrõkina achieving a historic seventh-place finish in figure skating.

At the Milano Cortina Winter Olympics closing ceremony, Estonian athletes will represent their country by carrying the national flag. Figure skater Niina Petrõkina is taking on this honored role for the first time, while speed skater Marten Liiv had previously carried the flag at the opening ceremony. Liiv, who competed in three events and placed as high as 14th in the 1000 meters, highlights the importance of the role for both athletes. Petrõkina, who achieved the best-ever Olympic result for Estonian figure skating with a seventh-place finish, expressed her excitement and pride in representing Estonia on such a significant stage.

The International Olympic Committee has adopted the dual flag bearer system for four consecutive Olympics now, promoting gender equality by allowing each nation to have one male and one female athlete represent them at the ceremonies. This initiative was first introduced at the Tokyo Games in 2021. The inclusion of both genders as flag bearers is aimed at celebrating the achievements and contributions of athletes regardless of gender, and it enhances the visibility of women in sports. The closing ceremony will be held at the Arena di Verona, starting at 21:00 EET on Sunday, further marking a memorable end to the Winter Olympics.
