Avalanches kill several after snow chaos in several ski areas

Two people have died in avalanches in the Austrian Alps following heavy snowfall over the weekend, bringing the total death toll in Austria to seven since Friday.

Two people tragically lost their lives to avalanches in the Austrian Alps on Saturday, following a severe snowstorm that has left a significant impact on the region. One victim, a 21-year-old man from Slovakia, was skiing off-piste when he was struck by a large avalanche, which buried him instantly as he was not equipped with avalanche safety gear. Meanwhile, in Tyrol, a 41-year-old Austrian was swept away by an avalanche and later succumbed to his injuries in the hospital after being rescued.

In the wake of these incidents, authorities have issued urgent warnings to skiers, advising them to refrain from venturing off marked slopes due to the increased risk of avalanches following the recent heavy snowfall. The snowstorm that struck Austria has been severe, depositing up to 40 centimeters of snow since Thursday, contributing to not only avalanche risks but also causing power outages and travel chaos in affected areas. This situation has underscored the dangers of skiing in adverse weather conditions and the importance of adhering to safety protocols.

As of Saturday, reports indicate that the total number of avalanche-related fatalities in Austria has risen to 24. The avalanche hazard now remains elevated, prompting concerns among both local authorities and the skiing community about the safety measures in place and the need for adequate preparation before engaging in winter sports, particularly in hazardous weather conditions. The incidents have reignited discussions around skiing safety and the necessity for proper equipment for those who choose to ski off-piste.
