Doctor was drunk at work - gets fired

A senior doctor in Sweden was fired for repeatedly coming to work under the influence of alcohol and failing to manage patient care appropriately.

A senior doctor employed by Region Västernorrland since 2018 has been dismissed for multiple instances of neglecting his duties, particularly related to patient care and handling records. Despite receiving several written warnings and a behavioral plan concerning his work hours, responsibilities, and alcohol consumption, the doctor continued to violate these guidelines, which included coming to work intoxicated.

Over the course of 18 months, the doctor’s performance was closely monitored by his supervisor, who documented a pattern of failures in managing patient records and following up with patients after consultations. Concerned patients began reaching out due to the lack of follow-up on their medical appointments, raising alarms about the doctor’s professional conduct and its impact on patient care.

Following an official complaint to the Health and Social Care Inspectorate (IVO) in October of the previous year, the region decided to take decisive action. The initiation of the dismissal process highlights the seriousness of the situation, as the healthcare system strives to maintain professional standards and prioritize patient safety in the face of such neglectful behavior.
