Bodies of 5 migrants found off the coast of Tripoli, Libya

Five migrant bodies, including two women, have been found washed ashore near Tripoli, Libya, following a report from local police.

Officials from the Libyan police reported the discovery of five migrant bodies on Saturday, among which were two women, washed ashore in the coastal town of Qasr al-Akhyar, approximately 73 kilometers east of Tripoli. The local police's investigation head, Hassan Al-Ghweel, stated that residents reported a child's body washed ashore, which was at risk of being taken back into the sea due to high waves, prompting a request for the coast guard's assistance in searching for it.

Al-Ghweel noted that all the bodies were of individuals with dark skin, discovered by locals on the beach in the western part of the city, who then alerted the police department, as reported by Reuters. Additionally, he mentioned contacting the Red Crescent to assist in retrieving the bodies, expressing belief that more remains might wash up on the shore in the future.

Earlier in the month, the International Organization for Migration announced that 53 migrants, including two infants, had either died or gone missing after a rubber boat carrying 55 people capsized off the coast near Zuwara, west of Tripoli. The ongoing migration crisis in the region continues to pose significant risks for vulnerable individuals attempting perilous sea crossings in search of better opportunities.
