Hatim gives new life to Poble-sec: "It can't be that many only come to the neighborhood to sleep"
Hatim Azahri is transforming the Poble-sec neighborhood in Barcelona by creating sports and community support facilities.
Hatim Azahri, a 27-year-old Moroccan-born social entrepreneur, has initiated projects in the Poble-sec neighborhood of Barcelona aimed at providing essential recreational spaces for the community. After witnessing the police's harsh treatment of local youth, who were fined for playing football in an abandoned space, Hatim felt compelled to act. His personal experiences growing up in Poble-sec motivated him to give back to the community that shaped his childhood, highlighting the need for accessible sporting facilities.
Having matured between the local school and his home, Hatim realized that many adolescents lacked the resources and opportunities to engage in constructive activities. His frustration peaked when he encountered better-equipped youth centers in other neighborhoods, which served as a stark contrast to what was available in Poble-sec. The transformation he envisions includes establishing venues that not only promote sports but also foster social interaction and support, fundamentally reshaping the neighborhood's landscape.
By founding the organization ‘Joves Units del Poble-Sec,’ Hatim aims to rally the community around the common goal of enriching the lives of its younger residents. His efforts not only address the immediate need for recreational facilities but are also a call to action for local authorities and citizens to acknowledge and invest in the potential of their community, ensuring that Poble-sec is a vibrant and active neighborhood rather than just a place to sleep.
