Venezuelan Justice Approves 379 Releases Due to Amnesty

Venezuelan authorities have approved the release of 379 individuals following the enactment of an Amnesty Law, a step indicated by a parliamentary figure.

The Venezuelan justice system has officially sanctioned the first 379 releases following the approval of the Amnesty Law, announced by Jorge Arreaza, a chavista deputy and president of the parliamentary commission overseeing this legislation. Arreaza stated during an interview that the Attorney General had lodged these 379 requests for amnesty with relevant courts, expecting the prisoners to be released between Friday night and Saturday morning. He emphasized that this would set the pattern for similar cases in the upcoming days.

The distribution of these amnesty requests is concentrated mainly in the capital, Caracas, where 371 individuals are set for release. Additional releases include five from the western state of Barinas, two from Portuguesa, and one from Monagas in the east. The announcement indicates a significant shift in the Venezuelan government's approach to political prisoners and could have implications for the broader political landscape in the country.

Gonzalo Himiob, the vice director of the NGO Foro Penal, which advocates for political prisoners, reported on social media that their organization is actively verifying the situation since early Saturday. The releases are part of a larger discussion regarding the treatment of political dissenters in Venezuela and the government's commitment to addressing human rights concerns, which have drawn international attention.
