SP creates seal for companies that excuse employee absences for taking children to the doctor

São Paulo has introduced a seal for companies that excuse employee absences when they take their children to medical appointments.

The Governor of São Paulo, Tarcísio de Freitas, has approved a new piece of legislation that creates the 'Selo Amiga do Cuidado' (Friend of Care Seal), which is awarded to companies that excuse justified absences for employees who need to take their children, wards, or dependents to medical appointments or school commitments. This initiative, presented by the Feminist Caucus of PSOL, has garnered support from all female opposition legislators, highlighting a collective effort towards better work-life balance practices.

The seal signifies a recognition from the state’s public administration, which will only be granted after companies demonstrate compliance with this caregiving policy. This recognition could also benefit participating companies by providing additional scoring or tie-breaking advantages in bids for public contracts and partnerships, suggesting a potential incentive for businesses to adopt more family-friendly policies.

Advocates for the initiative argue that it represents a significant victory for workers, enhancing existing social responsibility practices and encouraging greater support from employers in accommodating family needs. The law aims not only to normalize but also to promote caring roles within the workforce, fostering an environment where employees can manage both their professional duties and family responsibilities effectively.
