Kekkonen's childhood home for sale – 25 euros offered

The childhood home of Finnish President Urho Kekkonen is up for auction with a current highest bid of just 25 euros.

The childhood residence of former Finnish President Urho Kekkonen is currently up for auction by the city of Kajaani. The property, completed in 1910, originally consisted of multiple residential apartments but was converted into office space in the 1980s, as noted in the sales announcement. A plaque on the building’s facade indicates that Kekkonen lived there from 1911 to 1926, moving to Helsinki in 1921 to study law, which he completed in 1926.

Kajaani listed the property for sale on an auction site called Kiertonet in early January, and there are still six days remaining for bidding. Despite the historical significance of the house, there have only been a few modest bids so far, with the highest offer by Saturday evening being a mere 25 euros. This low bidding reflects perhaps a lack of interest or the challenging market conditions in Kajaani for such properties.

The attempts to sell Kekkonen’s childhood home are not new, as it was also listed for sale in 2024 with an asking price of 130,000 euros, according to Helsingin Sanomat. Its current sale for a drastically reduced price indicates that efforts to secure a suitable buyer continue to face difficulties, raising questions about the preservation of historically significant buildings in Finland, particularly those related to notable figures such as Kekkonen.
