Five people in France accused of financing Hamas
Five individuals in France have been charged with financing Hamas through two local organizations, following a counter-terrorism investigation.
French prosecutors announced on Saturday that five individuals have been charged in connection with two French organizations accused of transferring funds to Hamas, the Islamic Resistance Movement. These individuals were placed under judicial supervision after charges were brought against them on Friday, corroborating information from the newspaper "Le Figaro," which noted their ties to the organizations "Omani Terre" and "Soutien Omani Terre." The charges include "financing a terrorist project" and operating within a "criminal organization."
The charges were made after raids were conducted on the "Omani Terre" organization, along with offices and homes of individuals either currently or previously associated with these organizations. The investigation is rooted in a preliminary inquiry that was initiated in November 2023 and is being handled by a specialized counter-terrorism department within the Paris Criminal Police, the Directorate General of Internal Security focusing on domestic espionage, and the Central Office for the Fight Against Major Financial Crime.
The French prosecutors indicated that these organizations aim to provide social assistance to Palestinian residents in refugee camps, raising concerns about the potential misuse of funds intended for humanitarian purposes. This case adds to the broader discourse on the complexities of fundraising for humanitarian efforts in conflict regions, especially when there are allegations related to terrorist organizations, and highlights the French government's vigilant stance against terrorism financing within its borders.
