The deception of 'doubling gold,' turning stones into handkerchiefs... Three arrested including a woman
A police action in Saharanpur led to the arrest of three con artists, including a woman, who targeted shopping women in markets by deceiving them into giving up their jewelry under the pretense of doubling their gold.
In a significant breakthrough, the police in Saharanpur have uncovered an organized gang involved in cheating women during their shopping sprees. The operation, conducted by the Kotwali Mandi and Sadar market police, resulted in the arrest of three skillful swindlers, including a woman. Authorities seized cash amounting to ₹2,50,000, an Alto K-10 car, and two illegal knives from the culprits. The car was impounded under Section 207 of the Motor Vehicle Act, while a separate case was registered regarding the knives under the Arms Act.
The investigation was triggered following a complaint lodged on February 12, 2026, by Rekha Sharma, a resident of Bajoria Road. She detailed how an unidentified woman in an e-rickshaw lured her into a scheme promising to double her gold, which led to her and her sister-in-law being tricked into giving up their jewelry. Promptly after the complaint, the police registered a case and formed a special team as per the directives of the Senior Superintendent of Police.
Subsequently, police received a tip-off that led to the arrest of the three suspects. The ongoing investigation may reveal more about the operations of this gang and its potential links to similar frauds in the area, raising concerns over safety for women shoppers in local markets. The authorities are urging the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities.
