Fugitive who killed wife and set her body on fire in front of their children in PB arrested in MT

Edmilson Souza da Costa, convicted of killing and burning his wife's body in front of their children, has been arrested in Mato Grosso after fleeing from a semi-open prison regime in Paraíba.

Edmilson Souza da Costa, who was sentenced to 25 years in prison for the feminicide of his wife, Maria do Céu, was apprehended on October 19, 2023, at a farm in Sapezal, Mato Grosso, over 470 km away from Cuiabá. The crime took place in 2013 in Santa Luzia, Paraíba, while the conviction was handed down five years later, on March 27, 2018. Edmilson had been on the run after failing to return to the prison system while serving his semi-open sentence, which followed about ten years in closed detention.

According to the Civil Police of Mato Grosso, the fugitive was taken into custody following a warrant executed by local police, marking a significant development in a case that has drawn public attention due to its violent nature and the impact on the couple's children. Maria do Céu succumbed to her injuries roughly a week after the brutal attack, further highlighting the tragic circumstances of domestic violence that often leave lasting scars on family members.

The arrest underscores the persistent dangers associated with gender-based violence in Brazil, where the legal system continues to confront significant challenges in managing offenders, particularly those who violate parole conditions. Edmilson's case serves as a reminder of the urgent need for better protective measures for victims and stricter enforcement of legal consequences for perpetrators of similar crimes.
