A surprising substance helps with window cleaning right now

An expert shares a unique tip for cleaning dirty windows during the winter.

In Finland, winter brings unique challenges for cleaning windows, primarily because water used for cleaning can freeze upon contact with the glass. This makes it difficult to keep windows clear of dirt, as attempts at cleaning can sometimes lead to scratches on the surface. Reetta Alastalo, CEO of Koti Puhtaaksi Oy, has revealed a surprising solution for tackling stubborn stains, such as bird droppings, especially in freezing temperatures.

Alastalo suggests using a mixture of water and windshield washer fluid as an effective way to clean the outer surface of windows in cold weather. The windshield washer fluid prevents the water from freezing, allowing for efficient cleaning of stains that would otherwise be very difficult to remove in winter conditions. However, she emphasizes that while this solution is innovative, it is essential to handle the washer fluid with care, as it is a potent chemical not intended for regular household cleaning.

The proper mixing ratio to ensure both safety and effectiveness is one part washer fluid to one to two parts lukewarm water. Alastalo warns against the continuous use of washer fluid for home cleaning tasks, suggesting that it is better suited for specific instances when other methods may fail. Her advice comes as a practical guide for those struggling with window cleanliness during the cold Finnish winter, providing a simple yet effective option for homeowners.
