First civil flight from Damascus reopens Qamishli Airport

The first Syrian civil flight from Damascus has landed at Qamishli International Airport, marking a significant step towards making the airport operational again after the Assad regime's fall.

A milestone was reached as the first civil flight from Damascus arrived at Qamishli International Airport, signaling renewed efforts to reactivate the airport, which had primarily been used for military purposes in recent years. This development is particularly relevant as Qamishli is within the control of the Syrian Democratic Forces, and this flight is seen as a critical move in restoring civil aviation services in a region historically impacted by conflict.

The aircraft carried officials from the Syrian Civil Aviation Authority, highlighting the collaboration between the Damascus government and local authorities aimed at resuming operations at the region’s only functioning airport. The high-level delegation’s arrival was met by local security officials, emphasizing the importance of this intergovernmental dialogue in the context of ongoing efforts to stabilize the region and improve civil infrastructure.

Currently, a joint committee consisting of Syrian government and Kurdish representatives is convening to discuss technical rehabilitation of the airport's facilities, which have been inactive for over a year and a half. With expectations of specialized companies participating in maintenance and preparation work, the resumption of regular flights could soon follow, marking a significant development in regional connectivity and governance post-conflict.
