Child trapped in clothing on escalator – Rescue service to the aid
A child became trapped in their winter clothing on an escalator in a shopping center in Lahti, but was rescued with minor injuries.
In a troubling incident at the Sykki shopping center in Lahti, Finland, a pre-school aged child got trapped in their winter clothing on an escalator. The incident occurred on Saturday when the child stumbled and became stuck as the escalator was moving. According to Timo Kaivola, the on-duty fire chief from the Päijät-Häme rescue service, the child was quickly assessed by first responders and appeared to have sustained only minor injuries, primarily a scare rather than anything serious.
Emergency services responded promptly just before noon, managing to stop the escalator quickly, which prevented any further harm. The rescue team intervened by disassembling parts of the escalator mechanism and cutting the child’s clothing to free them. Thankfully, the situation resolved without serious complications, and the child was taken for medical evaluation as a precaution.
This incident highlights potential safety risks associated with escalators, particularly for young children, who may be at higher risk of getting caught in clothing or experience falls. Authorities may need to evaluate safety measures in public areas, particularly concerning equipment that could pose hazards for the young and vulnerable. The swift response from emergency services likely prevented what could have been a much worse situation, underscoring the importance of effective emergency protocols in public spaces.
