South Africa: Compulsory Gender-Based Analysis Training for Public Servants

The South African government has mandated an online Gender-Based Analysis (GBA+) training course for public servants to foster inclusivity in policy-making and service delivery.

The South African Department of Women, Youth and Persons with Disabilities (DWYPD) has launched a mandatory online training course known as Gender-Based Analysis Plus (GBA+) for public servants. This initiative aims to enhance governmental planning, budgeting, and service delivery to be more inclusive of gender, youth, and disabilities. The course equips public servants with tools necessary for developing responsive policies and programs that meet the needs of diverse populations.

The GBA+ training is designed to help officials adopt an intersectional perspective in their work, critically assessing how factors such as gender, age, disability, race, class, and geographic location affect individuals' access to resources and opportunities. By reinforcing these analytical skills, the course seeks to empower public servants to create policies that promote equity and inclusivity in government services.

Cassius Selala, a spokesperson for the department, emphasized the importance of this training for capacity building within the public sector. He noted that understanding the complexities of these social factors is crucial for effective monitoring and evaluation of government initiatives. This move reflects a broader commitment in South Africa towards gender equality and inclusivity in public service delivery, aligning with global trends in gender-responsive governance.
