Gout comes so close to breaking 10-second barrier, sets another record
Australian sprinter Gout Gout has set a new under-20s record in the men's 100m with a time of 10.00 seconds at a meet in Brisbane.
Gout Gout, an 18-year-old sprinter from Queensland, has showcased his remarkable talent by achieving a blistering time of 10.00 seconds in the men's 100m event at the Dane Bird-Smith Shield Meet held in Brisbane. This impressive performance not only earned him the victory but also established a new Australian under-20s record, surpassing the previous record set by Jake Doran in 2018, which was 10.15 seconds. The excitement surrounding Gout's run comes as he nears a significant milestone in track and field—the elusive 10-second barrier—which has only been officially broken by two Australian athletes in history.
In previous competitions, Gout has demonstrated his potential to break the 10-second mark, having unofficially done so twice in one day last April, although those times were disqualified due to wind assistance. This latest run in Brisbane marks a critical qualifying performance as Gout gears up for the World Athletics Under 20 Championships instead of participating in this year’s Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. His decision reflects a strategic focus on his long-term goals in athletics, particularly at an international level.
The achievement highlights Gout's determination and the evolving landscape of sprinting in Australia, where breaking the 10-second barrier remains a noteworthy feat. Only two Australians, Patrick Johnson with a record time of 9.93 seconds in 2003 and Lachlan Kennedy with 9.98 seconds in 2022, have achieved this milestone. As Gout continues his journey toward elite levels in the sport, attention will undoubtedly be drawn to his progression and future performances as he aims to cement his place among the fastest sprinters in Australia and beyond.
