Prime Minister Kim Min-seok: U.S. Tariff Ruling Indicates Changes - Will Respond Wisely
South Korea's Prime Minister Kim Min-seok suggests that the recent U.S. Supreme Court ruling on tariffs during the Trump administration may lead to changes in South Korea-U.S. trade negotiations.
On October 21, Prime Minister Kim Min-seok remarked on the implications of a recent U.S. Supreme Court ruling that deemed certain tariffs imposed during the Trump administration as illegal. Speaking at the 'K National Policy Briefing' held in Pohang, he indicated that the ruling could potentially shift the dynamics of South Korea-U.S. trade negotiations. He stressed the importance of monitoring the situation wisely to explore possible changes or adaptations in tariff negotiations, emphasizing a careful approach on how to proceed amidst the evolving circumstances.
Kim further explained that while the South Korean government had not yet fully deliberated on how to respond to the ruling, it remains essential to uphold the agreements made between the two nations. He acknowledged the complexity of navigating international trade laws, pointing out that such negotiations are fundamentally political and economic in nature, involving both countries' trade interests rather than pure legalistic frameworks.
In addition, Kim addressed the topic of administrative integration among local governments, defending the anticipated benefits in terms of increased authority and financial capabilities. He highlighted that the choice of whether or not to pursue integration lies with the citizens and leaders of Daegu and Gyeongbuk, emphasizing that the empowerment of local residents is crucial. He called for political reforms to foster a more balanced and pluralistic political landscape, where diverse voices are considered in governance.
