IFCE investigates possible discovery of oil during water well excavation in Ceará's sertão

Researchers from the Federal Institute of Ceará are investigating a potential oil discovery in Tabuleiro do Norte after a substance resembling oil was found during a water well excavation.

A team of researchers from the Federal Institute of Ceará (IFCE) is currently investigating a possible discovery of oil in the municipality of Tabuleiro do Norte. This investigation was initiated after residents reported finding a viscous, dark liquid with characteristics similar to automotive oil while digging a water well. Laboratory tests are underway to confirm the composition of the discovered substance, and preliminary results indicate that it has similar physical-chemical properties to oil found in neighboring regions, specifically in Rio Grande do Norte.

The incident occurred in December 2024 in the rural locality of Sítio Santo Estevão, where farmers were drilling a well around 40 meters deep in search of water. Following the discovery, Sidrônio Moreira's family, who were involved in the excavation, contacted IFCE to report their findings. The presence of a potentially valuable natural resource has prompted further investigation, and the National Petroleum Agency has been informed regarding the situation, although they have yet to respond.

This discovery could have significant implications not only for the local community in terms of resource availability but also for the broader economic landscape in the Ceará region. If confirmed, the presence of oil could lead to economic opportunities, including job creation and investment in infrastructure. However, there are also environmental concerns that need to be considered, and the ongoing investigations will determine the next steps in managing this potential resource responsibly.
