Consumption tax reduction, parties excluding Team Mirai are in favor - Asahi University survey
A survey by Asahi Shimbun and the University of Tokyo shows that parties, except for Team Mirai, support the reduction or abolition of the consumption tax, with varying degrees of agreement among them.
A recent survey conducted by Asahi Shimbun in collaboration with the University of Tokyo's Taniguchi Masaki Research Lab analyzed the policy positions and political stances of candidates elected in the recent House of Representatives election in Japan. Notably, all political parties except for Team Mirai have united in advocating for either a reduction or the complete abolition of the consumption tax. This marks a significant change, especially as the ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), which faced a defeat in the previous summer's House of Councillors elections while proposing cash allowances, has shifted its stance under the leadership of Prime Minister Taro Aso, who has pledged to accelerate discussions regarding the complete elimination of consumption tax on food products for two years in the party's electoral promises.
