Knitting attracts more and more - screen-free gatherings in Värmland

Interest in knitting and other handicrafts among young people is growing in Värmland, as a retreat from digital connectivity and productivity pressure.

The trend of knitting and other handicrafts is gaining popularity among young people in Värmland, as indicated by the 2026 Youth Barometer, which highlights a desire for less screen time and more creative pursuits. This movement, described as 'Grannies Hobbies,' suggests that young people are looking for leisure activities that allow them to disconnect from constant digital engagement while still being active and creative.

Regular knitting and crocheting gatherings are now taking place across Värmland, including at Karlstad University, where knitting lunches are organized every other week. Marie-Louise Eriksson, a librarian and organizer of the university's knitting events, notes a significant interest from both students and faculty. While the first event of the semester saw no student attendance, it attracted outside participants, illustrating a broader community interest beyond just the student body.

This resurgence in traditional crafts is part of a larger movement toward screen-free moments and the enjoyment of hand-made creations. Alongside knitting, the Youth Barometer mentions other activities like crafting, painting, and puzzles as part of a growing trend aimed at providing young people with a productive yet relaxed way to engage with their creativity and enjoy time away from digital devices.
