Tremembé, Areias, and Jambeiro experience a decline in formal jobs in 2025, according to a study by Unitau/Caged
A study shows that Tremembé, Areias, and Jambeiro have experienced significant job losses in 2025, particularly Tremembé with an 18.94% decrease in formal employment.
A recent study conducted by the Economic and Social Research Center at the University of Taubaté (Nupes/Unitau) reveals that Tremembé, a city known for its dormitory characteristics, has lost 1,112 formal job positions in 2025. This figure represents an alarming decline of 18.94% compared to 2024, marking the largest reduction among the cities evaluated. Subsequently, the municipalities of Areias and Jambeiro also recorded job losses but at lesser rates of 9.94% and 8.2%, respectively.
The study attributes this job loss phenomenon to the cities' demographics, as Tremembé, Areias, and Jambeiro are considered dormitory towns with limited formal employment opportunities in relation to their population size. Notably, Tremembé exhibits one of the lowest ratios of formal jobs to population, standing at just 8.9%, better only than Arapeí and Potim, which have ratios of 7.1% and 6.07%. This situation highlights an ongoing challenge for local economic development and job creation in these communities.
As the study points out, the relationship between formal job availability and the population size is critical for assessing economic health. The significant drop in employment underscores the need for local authorities to implement strategies that foster job creation and improve the overall economic conditions for residents of these municipalities.
