Heavy rains cause flooding in the capital; cities in the interior were also affected
Heavy rainfall has led to significant flooding in Campo Grande and other cities in the interior of Brazil this weekend.
On Friday, heavy rains hit Campo Grande, the capital of the state of Mato Grosso do Sul, and affected several interior towns. The instability in weather patterns is attributed to a combination of heat and humidity, leading to expectations of intense downpours alongside lightning and strong winds throughout the weekend. The deluge has already caused flooding in various parts of Campo Grande, particularly in the Noroeste neighborhood, severely impacting children's ability to get home from school. The rainfall also obstructed major roads, such as Avenida Ernesto Geisel.
In Bela Vista, over 120 millimeters of rain fell, resulting in significant damage as roofs were torn off houses, streets were flooded, and trees were knocked down. Weather forecasts predict continued rainfall over the weekend, with conditions remaining unstable. By Saturday afternoon, rainfall is expected to intensify, bringing risks of thunderstorms and further disruption.
The weather outlook for Sunday indicates that Campo Grande may experience the highest levels of rainfall, with potential accumulations reaching 16 millimeters. The rainy conditions are not expected to subside immediately, as continued instability is forecasted for Monday, indicating that residents may face more challenges related to flooding and travel disruptions in the days ahead.
