Horrific Accident at the Olympics - A Skate Hit an Athlete's Eye
A short track speed skating incident at the Olympics resulted in a serious injury for Polish athlete Kamila Sellier when a competitor's skate hit her eye.
During the women's 1500-meter quarterfinals in short track speed skating at the Olympics, a terrifying accident occurred when the skate of American athlete Kristen Santos-Griswold struck the eye of Polish competitor Kamila Sellier. This unfortunate event unfolded in a turn of the track where three out of six competitors lost their balance, leading to a collision that caused Sellier to fall onto the ice, with the skate making direct contact with her eye.
The impact was severe enough that it resulted in Sellier losing her glasses, and immediate blood loss was visible shortly after the incident, as shown in slow-motion replays. Emergency medical personnel quickly responded, raising a protective curtain in front of the athlete while she was being attended to on a stretcher. The competition was halted immediately following the collision to ensure the athlete's wellbeing and allow for appropriate medical care.
Fortunately, CBC reporter Devin Heroux later reported that there was positive news regarding Sellier's condition, with the athlete giving a thumbs-up to indicate that she was alert while being treated on the stretcher. The incident raised concerns over safety in the sport and highlighted the risks athletes face during high-speed competitions like short track speed skating.
