Itamar Vieira Junior to Release Second Book in the United States After Success of 'Torto Arado'
Brazilian writer Itamar Vieira Junior will release 'Saving the Fire' in the U.S. on September 1, following the success of 'Torto Arado'.
Itamar Vieira Junior, a prominent Brazilian author, is set to release his second book in the United States titled 'Saving the Fire', which is the English translation of his acclaimed 2023 work 'Salvar o Fogo'. The release is scheduled for September 1 by Verso Books, with the translation done by Johnny Lorenz, who also translated Vieira Junior's first book, 'Torto Arado', which received significant international attention and was a finalist for the Booker International Prize. This latest work further establishes Vieira Junior's reputation within the English-speaking market.
Following the book's release, Vieira Junior and Lorenz will engage in a series of events in the U.S. during the latter half of the year, including participation in an event hosted by Brazil LAB at Princeton University in October. These engagements emphasize the growing recognition of Brazilian literature on the global stage and the role Vieira Junior plays in representing contemporary Brazilian narratives.
In addition to its U.S. debut, 'Salvar o Fogo' has already garnered acclaim in Brazil, winning the Jabuti Prize for Literary Novel in 2024, an achievement he previously accomplished with 'Torto Arado' in 2020. The story centers around a character named Moisés, who navigates life with his father and sister, Luzia, in the Brazilian countryside, highlighting themes of family and resilience in a culturally rich setting.
