Piauí receives 1st batch of dengue vaccine to immunize healthcare professionals

The first batch of the dengue vaccine has arrived in Piauí, Brazil, to immunize around 32,200 healthcare workers.

The Piauí state health department has received the first batch of a new dengue vaccine developed by the Butantan Institute, which is aimed at immunizing professionals in the Primary Health Care system. Approximately 6,950 doses have been delivered this Friday, 20th, as part of a total of 13,900 doses that will be allocated to the state. The next batch is expected to be delivered on Monday, 23rd, and health officials plan to begin distributing the vaccine to municipalities once all doses are received.

The vaccine is notable for its tetravalent nature, meaning it protects against all four serotypes of dengue. It is a single-dose vaccine, making it easier to administer in a healthcare setting. The coordinator of immunization at Sesapi, Bárbara Pinheiro, mentioned that 32,200 health workers in the state will be eligible for the vaccine, highlighting its importance in safeguarding those on the front lines of health service delivery in the fight against dengue.

Such measures come in response to rising concerns regarding dengue outbreaks in Brazil, where the disease remains a significant public health challenge. The introduction of this vaccine could represent a critical step in controlling dengue transmission and protecting healthcare workers, who are at increased risk during outbreaks. As the vaccination campaign progresses, it will be crucial to monitor its uptake and effectiveness across the region.
