Artist and Purvitis Prize winner Romans Korovins has passed away

Renowned Latvian artist Romans Korovins, who received the Purvitis Prize for his solo exhibition 'We Will Die Together', has died.

Romans Korovins, a prominent figure in the Latvian art scene and a recipient of the distinguished Purvitis Prize, has passed away. He was an alumnus of the Janis Rozentals Riga Art College and earned both bachelor's and master's degrees from the Graphics Department of the Latvian Academy of Arts. His works are featured in the collections of the Latvian National Museum of Art and the Latvian Centre for Contemporary Art, as well as in private collections across Europe and the USA. Korovins was known for his diverse artistic practices, engaging in photography, drawing, video, installations, and painting, even though he specialized in graphic arts during his studies.

Korovins emerged as a key player in the Latvian art landscape in the 1990s. He had been nominated for the Purvitis Prize multiple times, achieving acclaim for his exhibition 'We Will Die Together', which was showcased at the Mark Rothko Art Centre in Daugavpils in the spring of 2024. In addition to the prestigious Purvitis Prize, he was also recognized with the Latvian Annual Photography Award in 2006 and 2007. His artistic contributions and achievements have left a significant mark on the contemporary art scene in Latvia.

In recognition of his impact, Korovins's work was highlighted in various media, including a feature on Latvijas Radio's 'Cultural Roundup' program prior to the Purvitis Prize awards. His versatility as an artist and ability to resonate with contemporary themes positioned him as a noteworthy figure in modern art, both in Latvia and internationally.
