Parasport Denmark understands anger over Russian flags, but rejects boycott of the Paralympics

Parasport Denmark acknowledges the anger from Ukraine, Czech Republic, and Poland over Russian participation but chooses not to boycott the event.

Parasport Denmark has stated that it understands the strong reactions from Ukraine, Czech Republic, and Poland regarding the participation of Russian and Belarusian athletes waving their own flags at the upcoming Paralympic Winter Games. Despite these nations deciding to politically boycott the opening ceremony of the event scheduled for March 6, Denmark has opted not to follow suit, emphasizing the importance of focusing on sports rather than politics.

In an interview, Asger Lind Krebs, a board member of Parasport Denmark, highlighted that the country's decision is influenced by its commitment to support its sole athlete, Adam Nybo, at the games. Krebs stressed that Denmark aims to provide a positive sporting experience for Nybo, steering clear of the political controversies surrounding the event. He mentioned that by sending a predominantly sports-focused delegation, Denmark views a political boycott as an empty gesture that would not contribute meaningfully to the situation.

Parasport Denmark is closely monitoring how the situation unfolds, particularly how the Russian representatives and the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) manage the political sensitivities. Krebs underscored the necessity for the event to remain devoid of political tensions, ensuring that it remains an arena solely for athletic competition and camaraderie among athletes from diverse backgrounds.
